“When life knocks you down, get back up, laugh in it’s face, and tell it that it hits like a little bitch.” That’s been the motto that Carlota Esteban has lived by. Carlota was a teen mother who ended up raising her daughter alone since she was 17, with all of the trials and tribulations that come with it. All in all, while not perfect by any stretch, she was a loving and devoted mother who always put her daughter Alma first above all else. While working full time, she saw Alma off to school every morning with a packed lunch, taught Alma valuable life lessons, helped with Alma’s education, and above all, encouraged her daughter’s dreams and ambitions while focusing Alma’s attention on said dreams. No amount of scorn and whispering by busy bodies at the PTA, no beaurocratic obstacles, nor any self doubts dampened her resolve to ensure that Alma had the best life possible. Well, not it’s time for Carlota to laugh in life’s face and tell it that it hits like a bitch. With Alma becoming an adult and going off to college in a different part of the country, Carlota is unsure what to do with her life for the first time in 18 years. She’s on her own, and things aren’t quite the same. Her apartment feels empty, work seems pointless, and the support system that she’s built up for almost two decades now seems redundant. Simply put, she has a really bad case of Empty Nest Syndrome. But, nothing that banal will keep her down. Recently, she decided to take a risk and enrolled at GEU to continue her education. She has been making a conscious effort to expand her horizons, even going so far so to seek help online for ideas. She’s been going out and socializing more, exploring new hobbies, and trying to relax. And while it’s been difficult for her, she’s giving Alma her own space outside of the periodic call to check in and see how her daugther is doing. Frankly, the one area where she’s been struggling is dating, especially since she’s used to living vicariously through porn for her romantic needs and sexual frustrations.
