However, Nina fell victim to a trap as the Vampire Sara had overheard Nina admitting she was the one who had tortured her into wanting to kill Rona, and has thrown her lot in with the rebels. Nina convinced Sara that she can save Rona.. at a cost. Rona is healed. But for the treatment to work, the vampire Sara had to die. Now the final battle has been fought and won, but Nina deviated from the plan and destroyed a moon base run by the aliens with an atomic weapon, delivering an ultimatum that they must withdraw to their own universe. A few years later the drug caused those who had used it to mutate into vampires- and Rona, crazed during her transformation attacked the woman she loved, Sara, infecting her with the virus. Unwilling to turn into a vampire, Sara jumped out of their apartment window to her apparent death.

Soon the vampires spread their dominion over their Earth and humans became all but extinct. However a freak accident showed the universe to be actually a multi-verse and so Reapers- vampires with extraordinary abilities- are sent to seek out suitable Earths where the population can be used to feed their own. Prime amongst them is the first vampire, Rona, who for many years has been the darling of her people. But Rona has started to question her role and upon a chance encounter with another Sara on a world facing a Zombie apocalypse, goes on the run with her, and another inhabitant of that Earth, a news reader called Rita. Rita has been turned by Rona into a vampire after she sustained fatal injuries trying to commit suicide when forced into being a sex slave for a gang who ran what appeared to be a safe haven. However Rita's zombie virus and the vampire virus combine to make her more powerful than a normal vampire, but one prone to momentarily turn human again at random intervals.
